Common eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts can be kept at bay through slight lifestyle modification. Following are a few tips that will keep your eyes healthy: - Eating a healthy balanced diet containing fish, fruits and vegetables including spinach, red peppers, kale, leeks, avocado, peaches and blueberries can reduce your risk of developing common eye conditions.
- Exercises increase oxygen supply to the eyes, lowering the pressure in them and helping them stay healthy.
- Lack of sleep and fatigue can lead to your eyes becoming sore, irritated, puffy, red and bloodshot. Ensure they have a good nights sleep.
- Drink plenty of water. Dehydration leads to irritated and sore eyes.
- Protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Constant exposure to ultraviolet light causes damage and degeneration.
- Wearing safety glasses and protective goggles while playing sports or working with hazardous and air-born materials lowers your risk for eye injury.
- Smoking is associated with eye diseases. Quit smoking to minimize the damage.
- Limit alcohol intake to avoid reduction of antioxidants that protect eyes against common diseases.
- To maintain good eye health and vision, it is important to see an eye health-care provider at least once per year, or immediately if you have any degree of sudden vision loss, eye pain, or irritation.
